AP International Symposia & SNF

Stiftelsen Nordisk Fysiologi (SNF) was established by the Scandinavian Physiological Society (SPS) in 1994/95, as a separate foundation aimed at supporting activities that will benefit the physiological sciences in the Nordic countries.

Structure
SNF is registered in Norway. Its Board of trustees consists of 4-5 members, never more than one from each country (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden). The Editor in Chief of Acta Physiologica (AP) and the Secretary General of SPS are members ex officio, the other 2-3 are appointed by the Board of SPS.

Activities
During the last 10 years, SNF has focused on financing the so-called Acta Physiologica Scandinavica International Symposia, now Acta Physiologica International Symposia (AP Symposia). These are arranged in the Nordic countries by strong local groups with the aim of bringing top international and Nordic scientists, within selected fields of physiology, together. Typically, some 20-40 scientists are invited.

Additional aims of the AP Symposia

  1. A limited number of "young" Nordic physiologists - e.g. PhD students -  should be given the opportunity to participate in the symposia, and to expose themselves to these selected groups of leading scientists. If possible, they should be invited to present their work as posters.
  2. With a view to obtain high quality reviews/original papers for Acta Physiologica, the speakers are invited to the symposium on the understanding that they, during the meeting or shortly afterwards, will submit their communication for publication in this journal.
  3. Finally, the AP Symposia should serve to keep the international scientific community aware of Nordic physiology and the journal Acta Physiologica.

Application
Applications for financial support should be made latest January 31st 2009 for arrangements in the time period October 1st 2009- September 30th 2010. Since 2009 is the first year for application deadlines, also applications for arrangements earlier than October 2009 will be evaluated by the board. Applications should be sent to the Secretary General of SPS, professor Ole Skøtt, who will forward them to the Board of trustees.
