Dear member

The new secretariat is looking forward to working with the Scandinavian Physiological Society and we will do our best to provide our members with interesting information and activities. We also hope that you will enjoy this first newsletter of the autumn. You can now find us on Facebook as well as our own website! If you know some interesting news you want to share, be sure to post it there or contact us.

We have just one favour to ask of you as a member. Since it is very important that our member directory is updated, can you please take five minutes to log on to Scandphys.org and update your personal information? Login with you membership number as username.

If you have any problems doing this, please contact us at contact@scandphys.org and we will assist you.

Markus Sjöblom (Meeting Secretary)

Markus was born in Karlskrona in the southeast corner of Sweden. He did his PhD at Uppsala University in Sweden working in the field of brain-gut communication and its role in regulation of intestinal secretion. He defended his thesis in 2003 and then did a first postdoctoral fellowship with Prof. Ursula Seidler at Hannover Medical School in Germany and a second postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Neuroscience in Uppsala. In 2009 Markus became Assistant Professor at the Department of Neuroscience where he has now established his research group. Markus research is mainly focusing on the neuroendocrine regulation of proximal small intestinal functions, such as mucosal permeability, mucosal ion transport, mucosal secretion and fluid absorption and intestinal motility.

Hanna Taylor (Administrative Coordinator)

Grew up in Karlskoga and moved to Uppsala to study biology. She did her masters thesis in Zooecology in 2004. Before taking this position Hanna worked as a secretary for the head of the research department at the Swedish Museum of Natural Historyin Stockholm.

Bryndis Birnir (Secretary General)

Bryndis studied in the USA in Seattle (BS, UW) and Los Angeles (PhD, UCLA) where she focused on sodium-dependent cotransport in the laboratory of prof E.M. Wright. She then moved to Australia and did a postdoctoral fellowship with prof Peter Gage where she started to study GABA-gated ion channels. In 2000 Bryndis moved back to the Northern hemisphere and took up a position at Lund University in Sweden and in 2008 she became Chair in physiology at Uppsala University in the Department of Neuroscience. Bryndis research is focused on the role of GABA in a variety of physiological processes such as neuronal inhibition, metabolic homeostasis and immune modulation. Bryndis was born in Reykjavik, Iceland and currently holds a double citizenship, Icelandic and Swedish.

Anders Arner (President)
